    Ello folks,

I’m wanting to get my head right before next pay day – Friday 25th October.

I seem to be having a reaccuring issue (last few months now), where by on payday whatever is left after essentials and rent and bills, doesn’t feel ‘enough’. Is this because i have lost the value of money? Is it because all i want to do is spunk my wage on slots or roulette?

For example last weekend i got paid and was left with around 350.00. Sensible me knows that £90 a week disposable is decent, and that amount will increase a few hundred in future once some repayments have now been complete.

Stupid / gambling me though thinks just skim the 50.00 from the 350.00, top up the beer and fun funds, right? Quickly lost that on Video Slots small stakes and then chased the loss until i was left with 200.00. Luckily i stopped there as my brother was visiting the next day and couldn’t bare to be brassic for him after his 3 hour train journey to see me.

We had a great weekend eating and watching local football etc and when he left i had about 60 quid left. I couldn’t stand that is all i have after having a ‘normal person’ weekend (i work shifts), so once he left i blew it all into the nearest FOBT playing that damn 20p roulette that gives no chance!

After all this, i guess what i am wondering is do i need CBT / mindfulness therapy? Or to simply banish myself from the game all together etc.

October payday needs to be the start of a fresh beginning for me, I’m done with living off tips because i can’t control myself when playing! I’m restaurant manager and nearly 31 now so guess some sound advice or friendly or harsh words may help when i come back to this post later today.

Cheers all, have a super Tuesday!

I’d imagine there are plenty of people can relate to this. I think no matter what we do we always want more. I’ve been paid weekly all my life and hated the thought of been paid monthly for exactly this kind of post. It’s tough out there for many of us to get by but at least you do pay what needs to be paid before you have a dabble with the rest. If you have £90 spare on average per week would it be worth setting a deposit limit on video slots of £20 a week and self excluding from the bookies. Sounds like you know full well how shit fobts are and they are a waste of time or if you want a complete ban it’s self exclusion and gamstop. Good luck whichever you decide.

    Cheers Haz…

Yes mate i think i can deal with a budget! I’m not sure if £20 a week will appease me though. I like to try slots at 40-80p a spin, so maybe i should bank a percentage of my disposable and that’s it for the month? IE do the 20 a week you suggest or save it and do 80 a month in a bigger single session… i think i like long sessions haha.

It’s annoying about the FOBTs. I know how awful they are! My brother works for WH bookies too, so i should know better.

I think i need to just stop chucking change and more into them as it is a habit afterall for me, more than an addiction i think. I can do all week without a FOBT spin but if i have just one go it tends to be enough to trigger me into an emptying frenzy …

Ultimately i am very aware that i FOBT it when bored or alone, which has been quite often since moving cities this summer. Best reboot my Xbox up and find a good local for open mic nights

If you’re concerned, then sign up to gamstop. If you have a break, it may help you reset your mind to the value of money, just by seeing how much further that bit of money that would have been spent on gambling will get you. Hopefully, you’ll be able to snap your self out of it before it gets too bad. I’ve done a course in CBT to try and help my self, and I would recommend you look into it, even if it’s just a youtube video. 🙂

So why not if you have got £90 disposable income put £50 on a direct debit into a isa that you can only withdraw at the end of a year or two that way you can have £40 to play with with that as your limit and your are creating a little nest egg that once its at the year or two year point will give you a lump sum that you can use to say go on holiday or put towards a new car you get what i mean 🙂

I think the key is to see the bigger picture, £80 a week is decent disposable income. 4k a year, 40k a decade, 100k in 25 years.

It’s a lot of money ultimately and having things you want to spend it on may make it easier to save for them. Set goals and follow them through. Simple ones to start with to retrain your brain from the instant gratification that comes from gambling to the sustainable one that comes from planning.

    Good luck.

For what it’s worth I think that if you need to set deposit limits then you have a problem and if you have a problem you should just sign up to gamban but everyone is different.

    Brilliant mate!

Love the break down and forecast there, amazing isn’t it how adding up the bigger picture you can soon see £80 morph into 100k etc in future!

    Love it.

I think just seeing the replies here and getting it off my chest has made me feel better, and calmer. I think i’ll let Octobor’s wage roll in as normal and just step back from the greedy get rich quick scheme in my head! The idea of slow and low rolling appeals to me now i have calmed down from my original post which i think was spawned after a loss.

I hope you find peace of mind with it all mate.

I did CBT and it helped me out a lot. It broke things down for me into small packages, creating goals. I had a major gambling problem which was enhanced through my depression which i am still being treated for. i would get paid on the 28th of each month, transfer my mrs what was needed and then blow the rest on the slots. By the 29th i didn’t have anything left,i would then get payday loans out to try and get it all back.

I just lost total control of the gambling (no gamstop then)it got hold of me pretty bad,and the thing about it is you get tunnel vision. You don’t realize the damage it can cause to loved ones,it was as if i lost control of reality and i just felt numb. It was a terrible time and i am very ashamed of what i did because i was always someone who valued money. And to think this all started from a bit of random mail i got in the post from a casino back when no deposit on sign up was rife. Up until that point i didn’t even know you could gamble online,it never even crossed my mind.

Im glad to say the CBT helped bucket loads,i still gamble now,but i spend no more then £20 a month and i stick to one casino and that is a huge step because i would easily deposit £600 and up each month. and if i make a £10 profit i cash it out. It helped me value and look at things in a totally different light.

I would recommend Gamstop but it can also be a ball ache to get back with a casino after the exclusion period ends as my friend is finding out.  But personally what worked for me was getting a hobby. I got myself into astronomy and now do astrophotograpy and also got into plastering.
