Thanks Seedy. And just to reiterate for those who may have missed my post in the middle of all that bun-fighting.

In the light of comments bringing new insight into the machinations of certain streamers, I would like to distance myself from my original post. If I could suck it back through the internet I would. Well, I still think he puts on a good show, but the thought it could all be just a show rather sours the whole thing.

Chaps, as the OP I feel a bit embarrassed. My thanks to awesomex, for the comprehensive destruction of my assessment of Roshtein. My post was an honest opinion gained from watching him for several weeks. I was genuinely taken in, so don’t be too harsh please :).

Anyhow, this post has served a purpose. If what awesomex says is true (and I suspect it is), then it’s better out in the open. Maybe we have saved someone blowing their wedge.

Even though I may be naive I would be amazed if Rolla, Bandit and Chipmonkz are anything other than on the level. In fact Rolla is a bit too real for me sometimes. He’s a great chap and I love his streams, but there are times when I feel his pain too much for comfort.

As far as the randomness question is concerned, I have an IQ of only 130, so along with Haz, I’ll be holding the coats :).

It’s my honest opinion. I’ve no axe to grind either way.

And Eightblack you make a valid point. You’re no good to your loved ones if you’re dead.

At the same time though, do you think these kind words help to change your behaviour or do they actually encourage it. Maybe the make no difference either way, in which case kind words are probably the only thing a stranger can offer.

Thanks Haz. Well yes I suppose I was aware of this but needed to read it again. It definitely is barmy how a person can be so out of control but not accept they have a problem. Mind I’ve seen the same behaviour in other mental illnesses such as anorexia and alcoholism. The mind is a very odd thing.

Well you can guarantee £1000 by not depositing and taking the misses out for dinner instead.

Or you could deposit and probably lose the lot.

    Hmmm. Difficult decision.

Haz. So when I was a smoker, if I could have banned the sale of all fags then I would have. I loved to smoke but knew it was killing me. What I don’t understand is that when a gambling addict has these moments of clarity, which you say you have, why they don’t put all barriers in place to stop gambling.

By the sounds of it, even in your position of gambling a large wedge infrequently, I still would. Lets say you spend 400 notes a month. That’s £5K a year. Why wouldn’t a person just hand over the financial reins to a trusted person? Surely not to do so is just daft.

I know it can’t be so black and white, but it just bemuses me.

Haz, during those degen periods do you never get an hour or so of clarity when you could put on the brakes?

    Sali,

Yep, I agree with your definition of addiction, but the major point is that the person isn’t fully under the influence of the addiction 100% of the time. They have moments, evenings, days where the urge to gamble becomes too much and these are the danger times of course.

However, some of the time they have control. It’s in those moments that they are able to think clearly and exercise choice i.e. protect themselves and their families or just plough ahead on the road to destruction, as they know it’s only a matter of time before the next cloud descends.

But maybe I do see things as too black and white.

If you get no change from the casino, and they definitely have taken the money twice, then I would see your bank. They may well chase this up on your behalf.

I have to agree with JB here (first time for everything). That damn Daniel Negreanu crappy advert that keeps interrupting my YouTube viewing. “Loosey Goosey” my arse crack! After six months of the bloody advert I want to shove those chips up his Canadian butt.

in reply to: why is gambling so hard to stop #67743

I think gambling is hard to stop for many reasons. Firstly and most obviously it’s addictive, and addicts are suffering from a genuine mental illness (imo).

Less obvious is that it “kills” you very slowly. Drinking and smoking are very similar in that one more fag/drink, one more day of addiction doesn’t really do any measurable damage. It’s years of the stuff that finally takes its tole. The gambler doesn’t usually wreck their lives through one night of stupidity. It takes years for friends, then spouses and finally parents to eventually have enough. Years of abuse before finally the selfish behaviour drives them to the divorce courts, leaving them alone in life, with the only company left being “friends” down the betting office and on sites such as this.

Sadly it’s often only when they are face losing everything that they finally accept they have a problem and start the road to recovery. I have a background in psychiatry and have pretty well seen the whole gamut of mental illnesses. I would rate gambling addiction and alcoholism as the two of the most difficult to beat and very similar in their destructive potential.

Sadly I have no more information :). I think the girl was just “playing” and saw an opportunity to do a grown up thing. But even so it’s quite insane.

Just some random thoughts from a non addict.

    1) What would work for you. You are an addict so maybe the same approach would work with her.

    2) She needs to accept that this is a problem. Until then she won’t change her behaviour. So the usual non-confrontational, non blaming discussion needs to happen. It could easily descend into drama so you have to be careful.

    3) Set and agree a budget between you that she can blow on gambling. Maybe get her to put some of her cash into savings that she can’t get back easily.

    4) Make sure she has no access to other funds, else you will find your own accounts raided.

    5) Start paying her more attention. Rekindling the romance in a relationship will bring you both closer and allow her to “buy-in” to your concerns. It may also lessen the need for the highs gambling gives – we are all trying to fill a void after all.

Ultimately she needs to confront and accept her addiction. Without her accepting she has a problem nothing will change. If she’s on Gamstop she must already be aware, but being aware of it and actually staring the fact in the face is different.
